When Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Viral Photo Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her back yard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many others in the area, heard cracking sounds reverberating across the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the street, talking to a pair who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, sprinting towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one running in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and barefoot … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Courage During Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of acts of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, police and paramedics caring for dozens of those hurt.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the patrol base adjacent to the scene of the incident serving as a makeshift treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, for instance entering the surf to assist people needing help.

After the events, messages of support circulated widely. An online statement shared appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always overcome darkness”.

The squad of lifeguards issued a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive sentiments and support. We are deeply moved by the care shown towards our responders,” the group commented. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the crew rose to the occasion from the moment the violence commenced until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional narratives, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a mayor.

“These individuals demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines safe for the public, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much light we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
