Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, according to police.
The armed faction invaded the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
